Nutrition
The purpose of the Elderly Nutrition Program is to reduce hunger and food insecurity, provide nutrition education, and promote socialization of older individuals. Everyone age 60 or older is welcome to participate.
Congregate Dining and Home Delivered Meals are provided to prevent malnutrition and promote good health behaviors. Many older adults do not get adequate nutrition, which can impact health conditions and overall quality of life and well-being. Our nutrition program offers a varied menu each month, provides a well-balanced meal, and ensures that 1/3 of the USDA recommended daily requirements are contained in each meal served. Hot meals are available at various nutrition sites throughout Manitowoc and Kewaunee counties each day. Meals can also be delivered to qualifying home-bound residents.
The Nutrition Program is funded with Older Americans Act (OAA) funds, State and County funds, private contributions and participant donations. All participants are encouraged to contribute an amount they can afford towards the cost of their meal, but this is not required.
- Federal funds through Title III of the Older Americans Act provide an opportunity for participants to contribute toward the cost of the meal rather than be charged a fee per meal.
- All contributions are confidential. Meals will not be denied on the basis of an inability to pay.
- Participants receiving meals as part of the Home Delivered Meals program will receive a monthly statement by the middle of the month following the month of meal delivery. The statement will inform the participant of how many meals were served and the suggested contribution amount. Contributions are to be mailed to the ADRC of the Lakeshore in the self-addressed envelope provided with the statement. Participants are asked to contribute at a level that is comfortable for them.
