Nutrition Education

A registered dietitian provides or oversees food safety/nutrition education and nutrition screening for congregate and home delivered meal consumers.
As we get older, our nutritional needs change. We may not be as physically active as we once were. Additionally, our body’s metabolism may be less efficient. The combination of this, and other factors, may cause unplanned weight gain and less efficient nutrient absorption.
A general suggestion to maintain good nutrition as we get older is to select more nutrient-dense foods with lower amounts of fat and sugar (empty calories). Eat a variety of foods that are good sources of protein, vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Nutrition Education Websites
There are many great websites that exist to help you learn more about healthy eating, particularly as we age. Here are a few to get you started:
The Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources, or GWAAR, has a great nutrition section on their website.
GWAAR also created NOURISH Step, which is a nutritional mindset to help you make small steps to eating and feeling better!
The Administration for Community Living (ACL) has funded the Nutrition and Aging Resource Center, which has resources on reading nutrition fact labels, reducing sodium, eating on a budget, meal planning, and more!
Food Hero, by Oregon State University, has healthy recipes, gardening tips, and a blog/newsletter.
