Stroke Prevention
The Manitowoc County Health Department is proud to partner with the Wisconsin Coverdell Stroke Program.
Stroke prevention starts in the community. Wisconsin Department of Health Services (WI DHS) recommends recognizing the signs and symptoms of a stroke and call 911 immediately if stroke symptoms are suspected.
Balance – sudden loss of coordination or balance
Eyes – sudden change in vision
Face – sudden weakness on one side of the face or facial droop
Arm – sudden arm or leg weakness or numbness
Speech – sudden slurred speech, trouble speaking, trouble understanding speech
Terrible Headache – sudden onset of a terrible headache
Prevention also means making healthy lifestyle choices to reduce your risk of stroke.
- Eat a balanced diet
- Stay physically active
- Quit smoking

Stroke Recovery
Recovering from a stroke, or caring for someone who is, can be emotional and isolating. Connect with others who understand, gain helpful information, and ease the isolation that often follows.

- Call the Manitowoc County Health Department to connect with a nurse who can provide additional education and resources at 920-683-4155.
- Call the Stroke Family Warmline to connect with an American Stroke Association team member who can provide support, helpful information or just a listening ear. Call 1-888-478-7653, Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. CT.
