What Do I Do With Smoke Detectors?

It is recommended that residents dispose of smoke detectors by sending the used unit back to the manufacturer. This is because smoke alarms contain an ionization sensor, which is a small amount of radioactive material encapsulated in a metal chamber. Otherwise, residents can dispose of smoke detectors in their regular garbage since they are not covered in current landfill bans.

Neither the Recycling Center nor Clean Sweep Program accepts unwanted smoke detectors.

Businesses must return smoke alarms to the supplier.
